Cooking With Kids – Cheese Straws

Posted in For Tiddlywinks (Tags: , , , )

Freyja may be a little too young to properly get involved with cooking activities, but I don’t think it’s ever too young to start – even if it means just watching and eating.

She’s 21 months old now (christ, where’s the time go?!) so I thought she may even get a little involved if we bake something. So when Cass over at Frugal Family started this fortnight’s Cooking With Kids meme, I thought what the heck. Let’s give it a go. Mainly because I knew the recipe, Cheese Straws, would go down a treat and would let Freyja get suitably grubby.

If you would like to try your hand at the recipe, you can find it here. Its dead easy. Even I can do it. And I’m a bit of a tard in the kitchen.

Freyja got properly involved – I was well impressed! Yeah, we were covered in flour by the end of it, but isn’t that part of the fun? Yeah, she ate some of the mixture (I know, I know, raw egg = bad but if I told her no, she’d eat it anyway). And yeah, a dining room table on a tiled floor isn’t the safest of steps for an almost-2 year old to stand on to reach the counter, but it was OK because I wrapped my leg around it. I think I need to get a more suitable step thing though.

All in all, it was a success. We went for the straw shape rather than the cookie cutters that some other entrants have used. Mainly because I don’t have cookie cutters. We also threw in some mixed herbs to see what that tasted like. Although I am interested in trying pesto or sundried tomatoes next time. And yes, there will be a next time. Freyja loved being a part of it – even rolled out the dough and everything!

Although she did have a wobbler when they went in the oven and she couldn’t go in there after them. Harumph. I’m such a spoil sport.

Having a cheeky feel

Eating the rest of the cheese

Rollie Rollie

Stirry Stirry

Having a wobbler at them going in the oven

Check out the other entries over at the linky page. And we’ll be taking part again next time, I’m sure!

Sounds like you had a lovely time and I agree – no child is too young to be in the kitchen experiencing what is going on. I used to have my daughter in a sling while I was preparing the evening meal and she loved it! She’s nine now, so loves to get involved :)

Thanks so much for entering – I’m just doing the round up and the next challenge now x
