Lucky She Didn’t Break Something

Posted in General (Tags: , , , )

This morning was a morning like most mornings. James got up, got ready for work, I struggled to open my eyes. You know, the norm. He tottered off to work, I looked at the clock, listened very carefully and didn’t here a peep from Freyja so I rolled back over.

She started murmuring about 15 minutes later. That’s fine, I say. She’ll be fine for another 10 minutes. So I roll back over. Then THUD. Shit. What’s she done. I didn’t think any of her teddies were that heavy?

That’s because they’re not. It was her making the thud. Not her teddies. She’d managed to climb out of her cot, and then fall to the floor. I found her in a heap, crying, by her bookcase (which is at the other side of the room).

OK, so I have 2 choices. Start thinking about moving her to a bed (I wasn’t planning on this for at least another 6 months) or try and assess the deal with her current cot.

She hasn’t got any cot bumpers for leverage. It can’t have been that that helped her scale the sides. She does, at the moment, have a couple of towels underneath the mattress (she was a i bunged up so it elevated her head). I’ll move those – she could have been using that as a trampoline. She has a gazillion teddies – I’ll take some of them out – she could have used them as a step up . We have a stair gate at the top of the stairs, but until now, haven’t bothered closing it at night time. That’s got to change. I don’t want to wake up one morning to find her at the bottom of the stairs. That would be no fun.

The upside of moving her to a bed? I get to shop for a bed. A girly one. Lilac maybe. With princesses. The downside of a bed? She can get out of it. Without hurting herself either.

And when she is in a big bed she will totter into your room and want morning cuddles in mummy and daddy’s bed. Lovely and cute :) However Jared sometimes just marches into my room bangs the door wide open and demands I get up to do his breakfast which he then takes about 2 hours to eat! Yay fun!

Oh dear, how worrying! I wonder how she managed it? How old is she? I’ve been wondering when they go into a bed.

She isn’t 2 until April – evidently a bit of a daredevil! Very worrying, but didn’t do it last night. I guess I’ll just see what happens!

I utterly sympathise. I remember trying to eek out my daughter’s stay in her cot, but she also started climbing out…she never fell or hurt herself, but nevertheless starting her day with a serious climb wasn’t perhaps the safest thing for her! Once it happened a few times, I realised it was time for a bed. Yes, she could get out, plus side: the door handles are high so I could still dictate which room she was in! I found it a completely new phase once in a bed, and actually freed me up a bit because I realised the moment had come to start trusting her alone in her room with (safe) toys, the constant vigilance started not to be necessary…and then of course she’ll be taking herself off to the loo by herself when that time comes…yippee! So, plus sides too. Happy New Year and Happy Bed Shopping! E x

..and she of course can get out in the middle of the night and join you in the big bed!
We have the same problem but only recently, I aim to move the girls to ‘Big Beds’ when we do up their room these coming months…I’ll let you know how we get on
You know my son (now 23) got out of his cot at 10 months – he was a nightmare

Oo do let me know how you get on… I’ve just been having a nose at some toddler beds…

She didn’t climb out yesterday, but then it’s only been one day. Who knows what the next few weeks will be like. I have a feeling she’ll me migrating to a new bed sooner that I’d planned… x
