Soundtrack of my Life…
Posted in General
I’ve been tagged by the lovely Lauren over at the Real Housewife of Suffolk and the lovely Vickie over at Never Found the Plot to write about my favourite songs which define me. Now, I’m massively into my music and I’m going to include YouTube vids because I imagine that at least a couple of these, nobody else will recognise because my music tastes differ somewhat from a lot of people I talk to. I also hasten to add they are not all metal songs, so your ears won’t take that much of a battering if you do press play…
I’m going to add songs that are my favourites. Songs that make me emotional. Songs that I can’t help but get up and dance to and songs that mean something to me. I have read a few other “soundtrack” posts and I am so impressed by some people and their ability to associate songs with certain times or events in their lives…
I can’t. My memory is pants.
After reading the “rules” you are supposed to add songs from your ipod playlist, but I don’t have one of them. I don’t use my mp3 player and I don’t really use Spotify. So instead, I’ll just write about songs that I love. Because I can.
Nine Inch Nails: Hurt
This song is one of my all time favourite songs. When I saw them live a few years ago, I actually cried when they sang it. I had ideas of having some of the lyrics incorporated into a tattoo (with another song I’m about to write about) but I haven’t done that…yet…
It’s a song that was also covered by Johnny Cash – I have to say that his rendition is absolutely amazing and did Trent Reznor proud by doing it. In fact, it’s probably more well known as a Cash single – one of his final releases before he died and often considered his epitaph. Nine Inch Nails never released the song commercially but it can be found on their 1994 album, The Downward Spiral.
I adore this song. I adore the lyrics. I adore Nine Inch Nails. I’ve stuck the vid in for the one of Johnny Cash. Because, although I love NIN, Johnny gave the song a whole new meaning.
Annie Lennox: Love Song for A Vampire
This song can be found in the closing credits of the 1992 film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and it gives me goosebumps every single time I hear it. I think Annie Lennox is a fabulous vocalist anyway, but this song completely takes the biscuit.
It also means a lot to me because it is one of my mum’s favourite songs too.
Every time I hear it, I well up. This is the other song I would have had incorporated into a tattoo with Hurt. I love it so much.
It’s going to be our first dance when we eventually get married. IF James is still happy for that to happen (the song, I mean – not the getting married bit).
Rob Zombie: Dragula
How could I not write a post about my favourite songs and not include one by Rob? He has done so many fabulous songs, but this one is one of them that gets me up and headbanging every single time.
It gets played quite a lot at work and my eyes light up as soon as I hear it. I’ll quite happily be pouring pints and serving people headbanging away. I love it.
Pink Floyd: Coming Back to Life
It was a toss up between this and Wish You Were Here, but I think this one pips it to the post. I love Pink Floyd. I love their experimental progressive music. I’ve never had the chance to see them play live, but I have seen Australian Pink Floyd play twice and they are AMAZING – seriously, they are so close to being the real thing. Amazing.
Coming Back to Life reminds me of my uni days. Out of all their songs, I think this one has imprinted itself on my mind. Another one of them amazing songs that gives me goosebumps. The guitar solo at the beginning is enough to send shivers down my spine. David Gilmour rocks. Brilliant.
Lynryd Skynyrd: Free Bird
Lynryrd Skynyrd are an amazing American southern rock band from the 70′s and this song is probably the LONGEST SONG I’VE EVER LISTENED TO but is absolutely awesome. Any band who can play guitar like this band can is definitely worth a mention.
Oh, and I can play it nigh on perfect on Guitar Hero… I’m just that sad.
And there you have it! I could go on, but then I’d end up waffling for pages, and I don’t want to do that to you… These are my all time favourites. A little bit eclectic, but all amazing.
So, who to tag…

LOVE your music taste!! There’s definitely a rock-gothic-dark pattern going on there with NIN/vampire-influenced/Rob Zombie thing. WELL DONE on an awesome list!
I too love Trent Reznor and would have loved to have heard him sing Hurt live. Though have to say, call me a puritan but I disagree on Johnny Cash – I think he ruined the song and the feeling of it. Trent gives it so much depth – I cry when he starts with “And you can have it all”… his voice ever so slightly quivering, and the words.. AAAH… Johnny Cash couldn’t produce that. But that’s just my little opinion and it doesn’t take away from Hurt being an incredible song. OK think I’ll stop now with this post as I could go on – I’m a total music buff! Thanks for your post! It has definitely got me thinking!

Hurt is a favourite of mine too, both the Reznor and Cash versions. The Cash video has made tears well up in my eyes on many occasions, but I also love the darker, more tortured NIN original.
And you can’t not love a bit of Free Byrd!
