Metal Mummy’s Movie Meme: Week 2
Posted in Movie Meme
First of all, I just want to say thank you to everyone who took part last week. I was super nervous about how well this meme would go down – particularly as there are so many memes already floating around the blogosphere. I’m so chuffed people entered – it seems there a quite are a few movie fans out there! I hope you can all take part this week too, and also hope to see some new faces that didn’t enter last week. Onwards and upwards and all that!
Feedback from last week seems to be that it was a good theme, but ever-so-slightly broad. I can understand that. It encompassed so much. It was a whole 10 years of film that you had to choose from, with very little direction. I do want to narrow things down slightly, but still don’t want to segregate people if I can help it. So, this week, I’m going for a theme that can be interpreted how you want.
This week’s prompt is Black and White.
Whether it be a silent film, a 40s film, a 50s film or a modern film with a black and white twist, I would love to read about the film that gets you going from this genre. It doesn’t even have to be a black and white movie. It could be a movie about something black and white (admittedly, all I can think about is a penguin, but I’m sure there’s plenty more options out there!)
In all honesty, I’m not that clued up on old-school films but the ones I have watched, I have enjoyed. I love the atmospherics a black and white film can bring. Particularly in the modern films that use black and white cinematography.
But, out of all black and white films, one completely takes over my mind when thinking about the genre. One still terrifies me today and it is a Hitchcock masterpiece.
Psycho.
I’m 27 and I STILL can’t have a white shower curtain because of this film. I remember my mum having one in our old bathroom and on the odd occasion I had a shower instead of a bath, I was peering round it every other minute to check nobody was coming at me with a kitchen knife. It’s terrifying. Anthony Perkins is a legend in that film. Nobody could have played Norman Bates better.
To me, this film wouldn’t have been the same if it wasn’t black and white. This is demonstrated in the 1998 remake, which, although I quite enjoyed Vince Vaughn as the serial killer, was ultimately…well…crap.
A film worth watching is a film that makes an impact. And personally, this definitely makes an impact. On me, anyway. That mother persona is completely terrifying.
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to have a white shower curtain. I’ll definitely be wary when it comes to back-street motels in the middle of the USA and I CERTAINLY wouldn’t trust a bloke who looks or sounds like Norman Bates. Doubly wouldn’t trust one with Norman Bates as a name. Triply wouldn’t trust one who has taxidermy as a hobby and lives with his mother who you never see…
With Black and White as your theme this week, what film are you gonna write about? Can’t wait to read them!!

I have to say I still haven’t made it all the way through this film, and yes I have stood behind a shower screen whilst hubby has been the shower with a knife and done the sound!

Psycho is a brilliant, brilliant movie. So superbly made (though the start with her taking the money and getting to the motel is a bit slow) but the suspense of the movie is so much cleverer and scarier than many modern horror movies a bit like another of my faves I nearly chose to blog about The Night of The Hunter. It is so worth watching to the end (though possibly watching it during the daytime with all the curtains open). The bit at the end with the fly has to be one of the greatest movie moments of all time! Love it!
ps. after much deliberation and as per usual way too many words – my fave b&w choice is now up and linked :)

eek I’m a bit crap at black and white it reminds me of having to watch Battleship Potemkin and Metropolis about 20 times in a row when at college…short of loving Hitchcock I don’t think I’ve got enough to say this week but will be back next promise! xx
