Metal Mummy’s Movie Meme: Week 10
Posted in Movie Meme
Wow, it’s been 10 weeks! 10 weeks of movie talk! I’m impressed it’s even lasted that long and I haven’t left it by the wayside. I’m also surprised that I still have ideas for it.

This week, I want to focus on my favourite genre. I’ve been putting it off for a while, because I know that not everyone is into this genre as much as I am. I can’t put it off anymore I’m afraid. I love it too much to keep it on the back burner for any longer.
The theme is Horror.
It’s a broad category. I could split it up into lots of little ones, but maybe that’s something for coming weeks. This week, I just want one (or two) contributions from the whole of the horror genre. I am going to narrow it down a little bit for you (and for me) though. I want ones that scare you. One that really gets the adrenaline going. One that you have to hide behind a pillow for; or worse still, one you can’t even watch.
You see, I suppose I’m a little desensitised to horror films. I’ve grown up with them and have loved them for as long as I can remember. They don’t scare me anymore. Well, some do, but not many. Writing this post, I’m thinking about the movies that stand out in my mind as ones that my heart was pumping ten to the dozen during watching them. I’m not like some people. If something scares me, I will continue to watch it. I like the adrenaline. I like enduring it.
I don’t have nightmares because of films. I do sometimes have a paranoia alert and check things because I have a bit of a wild imagination. The other week, I was convinced someone was in the house and started pacing downstairs with the easily accessible kitchen knife. You know, just in case.
But with movies, not that many stand out in my mind as ones that genuinely scared me. I’m going to focus on one that I watched years ago. When I was about 14 actually. It’s probably why I can still remember it now. Because it’s the only one I can still be scared of if I watched it today. Having said that, I’ve not watched it for absolutely ages, and it’ll probably be crap if I watched it today, although I doubt it. It’ll probably still play on my mind.
This film made me want to say his name 5 times in the mirror and every time I did and I reached the fifth time, I couldn’t do it. Based on a short story by Clive Barker, who is also famous for bringing Hellraiser to us all and being a fantastic horror writer, and starring Virginia Madsen, Xander Berkeley and the awesome Tony Todd, this film was made in 1992 and is, well, brilliant.
I’m talking about the Candyman.
What I love about this film is it’s not just a horror film. It’s not just a Clive Barker adaptation, who personally, is an expert in his field and crafts some amazing stories with his weird and wonderful imagination. It’s a twisted love story as well, which is pretty reminiscent of other things Clive Barker writes. It also brings racial issues to the table, but not so much that it forces them upon you. It’s all very subtle.
Tony Todd is cast wonderfully. His voice gives you shivers down your spine so the little hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Virginia Madsen plays the uptown girl, Helen Lyle, who wants to explore local legend, and she plays the role well. Another thing I love about this film is, although it’s essentially a slasher flick (with a good storyline), it’s not your typical slasher movie. Although I like these kinds of movie, they’re laughable. This one isn’t. It haunts you. Yes, it’s gory in parts, but it’s not over-acted. It doesn’t have a bimbo in sight and the Candyman is terrifying.
Candyman is a man of legend. A one armed man, who’s myth terrifies all the locals. A man, who, if you say his name 5 times in your mirror, will appear behind you and slash you with his hook-for-a-hand. Awesome premise, don’t you think?
To me, Candyman is what nightmares are made of. None of this Freddy Krueger or Mike Myers lark (who are still brilliant, but just not Candyman). It’s a fantastic horror film and writing about it is making me want to watch it again.
Maybe I won’t be as scared of it if I watched it now. Maybe I will.
I know one thing though. I still won’t be able to say Candyman in my bathroom cabinet 5 times. You never know. It could all be real.
What horror movie scares the pants off you? Add your post to the linky below. I’m looking forward to reading all your entries.

Ooooh great choice! You don’t have to believe…just beware!
I ‘think’ I know what I’m going to pick. One that scared me when I was younger – bad effects looking back but full of atmosphere.
I’m off to write :)

I can’t believe you’ve chosen this theme *sob*. I’m petrified just reading your blog, and I skimmed it because I knew I would be! I’ve linked up with possibly a cheat, but the film gets me going.

Good choice. I’ve gone for an obvious one, I think, without checking (again) that someone has already done it. Duh. BUT IT IS MY SCARIEST FILM!

I use to say it in the mirror at my dad’s flat when I was on my own and shit myself when I ‘thought’ I’d seen him behind me. I love horror films so much! x
