Metal Mummy’s Movie Meme: Week 8
Posted in Movie Meme
It’s that time again, and it’s been a hectic hectic week. It was Freyja’s birthday at the weekend, so you can imagine how busy that was. I had a house full of children & friends. I’m surprised I’m still alive.
This weeks’ theme may or may not be a difficult one. I’m sorry if its’ hard, but I hope you can think of something for it. The prompt is World Cinema – so I would like anything that isn’t from the country you’re from – This is to give you a little more option if you don’t watch proper “world cinema” movies. So, if you’re English, anything that isn’t would be fine.
I’ve always enjoyed subtitled films. Films from the world over are some of the best films I’ve ever seen. They always seem to be more “raw” than their Hollywood counterparts. I’ve been umming and ahhing what film to write about. I have a huge love of everything Guillermo de Toro touches – he’s the guy that was behind Pans Labyrinth, and more recently, The Orphange. At one point a year or two ago, he was also in talks about making The Hobbit, but dropped out.
Anyway, I’m not going to talk about him. Or those films. As much as I love them – That’s because at the last moment, I remembered another one and my love of horror couldn’t stop me talking about it. It’s a film that was later remade by Hollywood and was completely CRAP.
The film is Rec - a 2007 subtitled, Spanish horror film, which follows a TV reporter and her cameraman who are making a documentary about a local fire station and what they do during the graveyard shift. They are called out to a woman who’s trapped in her flat in an apartment block, but things aren’t what they seem. The woman’s infected with something and bites one of the policemen whilst the other residents are terrified and trapped as the block has been quarantined.
It’s a brilliant film and it handles the “faux documentary” very well. Some movies (for me, The Blair Witch Project comes to mind) don’t do it complete justice, but personally, this one does. It makes you feel as though you’re there with these people and going through what they’re going through.
The thing I love the most about this film is the acting and the reactions to certain things. Yeah, the news reporter is a bit crap, but the rest of the cast are pretty awesome and in all fairness, she does improve. I love that in one scene, when the fireman falls from the stairs, not a single person knew what was going to happen. Those reactions were completely real. I love that. The cast were also not given their entire script, so they didn’t know of their fates – often not until the day of filming their last few shots – this meant that they were apprehensive and nervous – traits that would have benefited their characters for this kind of film. It was also fantastic, that the last few shots in the film which were in complete darkness were filmed that way using Infra-Red. Those poor actors didn’t know what the hell was happening. Awesome.
If you like zombie-esque films, and you like hand-held camera film jobbies, you should like this film. I get a bit funny when it comes to zombie/rage infected films – I tend to criticise them if they don’t portray the zombies/rage infected people the right way…
But Rec was awesome – thrilling edge-of-your-seat stuff.
Just a couple of tips in case you’ve not watched them – Don’t watch Rec 2 OR the Hollywood remake, Quarantine. They’re crap.
What’s your favourite film from around the world? I’m looking forward to reading your interpretations! Just add them to the linky when you’re done!

Not being the biggest fan of hand held recorded films, I’m not sure what I will make of this one, however is added to lovefilm collection.

Yowsers, this is a tough one. I don’t think I’ve seen a film that isn’t English/American English ;-) Tsk.

Aha brilliant!! Someone else who has seen Rec and loved it!! It scared the shit out of me when I first saw it, but then I like films like that… and yeah, Rec 2 is bloody awful, as is the American remake.
You might like Let The Right One In if you haven’t seen it already. And I mean the Swedish one, not the American Let Me In. Oh I should do a proper post and link it, but baby’s just woken up. Maybe later :)

Can’t believe I’m first!
Loving the theme this week.
mine was an automatic choice, a film I watched 20 years ago and still is held fondly in my memory.
Thx for bringing back the memories and the chance to share it.
