Advent 2011
Posted in General
This year, I decided to do something different. Last year, Freyja had a chocolate advent calendar – she loved it as she’s a sucker for chocolate (as am I), but this year I thought I’d try something new as an advent calendar idea. Seeing as Freyja’s now over 2 and a half, heading too quickly for her third birthday in April, I think she’s old enough to understand the magic of Christmas. She is beginning to get the concept of Santa and knows that any presents we have for her in the house are “Kist-mas” presents and “Father Kist-mas is coming”.
I am so excited for her. We went to a garden centre yesterday where she met some donkeys and saw the walls covered in christmas decorations. All the trees, all the pretend Santas, all the lights – she was mesmerised and so excited by it all (apart from the fake Santa’s lap you could sit on – terrified her).
So, the advent calendar. Inspired by this post I found online whilst browsing, I have bought her 25 books. One for each day of advent. I’ve gone down the “all-year-round” book instead of the festive ones, because, well, I don’t really like the Christmas books, compared with some of the fabulous ones you can get. I have wrapped them all individually, so that every day, she finds the correctly numbered book and unwraps it. I haven’t gone overboard with spends, using The Book People and Red House to purchase the collection and it has saved me a vast amount on stocking fillers. You can’t do with enough books for your child, personally. So this, I thought, was a great idea. You could make it even cheaper by going to your local second hand shop or car boot, or using the joys of eBay. I just didn’t have the time and as I was replacing stocking fillers with this idea, I didn’t mind spending a bit. Definitely a tradition I plan on keeping.

My problem is that we’ll have to keep this up EVERY year now.. we can’t just be lazy one year and be like “can’t be bothered this year, we’ll just get her an advent calendar” cuz she’ll be like WTF MUMMY DADDY!?

Lovely idea, looks there are some great books in there too! If only my two year old didn’t keep going for the same book every time we read!
